Dwight Correctional Center was a women’s prison located in Dwight, Illinois. It was operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections and was the only maximum-security facility for women in the state. The prison opened in 1930 and housed various offenders, providing a range of educational and vocational programs aimed at rehabilitation. Despite its long history, Dwight Correctional Center was closed in 2013 as part of budget cuts and efforts to consolidate the state’s correctional facilities. After its closure, the female inmates were transferred to other facilities, such as the Logan Correctional Center. The site was eventually repurposed following its decommissioning, but while operational, it played a significant role in the state’s correctional system.
